Survey Snapshots

Chris meets with some leaders of the Sob language area to plan the survey.	The team is packed and ready to leave Uria on the survey.	Todd Owen again accompanied Chris on this survey.	The people of Bil treated us as if we were royalty visiting them.
A scenic view in between the villages of Igoi and Dunaba.	The village of Bil welcomed us and provided this house for our overnight lodging.

Scenes from Igoi

This is our house in Igoi. There are four rooms inside.	Another view of our house. That is a shelter for visiting that is being built on the left.	This is how we catch rain water for drinking and washing.	We have two solar panels set up to charge our batteries to run our equipment.
This is our outdoor bucket shower. It really works quite nicely.	Chris sits down with a couple of men and tries to learn some new words in Sob for parts of a house.	This old man spends a lot of time with Chris trying to teach him Sob.	Ryne gets his first helicopter ride to the village from Ukarumpa.
Ryne got an unexpected hug at his first appearance in Igoi.	Everyone in Igoi was happy to finally meet Ryne personally.	They had only seen pictures of Ryne before. Now he became real to them.	Ryne gets a game of soccer in at Igoi.
Women had to carry water for us in their pots during the time that we had six people in our house.	The women poured the water into our barrels that we use for getting rain water.	Men and women spend Sunday afternoons at an adult literacy class held in the church.	Chris works on a kerosene pressure lamp. He is often called upon to be the fix-it man.
Children sit down on linoleum in their classroom at Igoi Elementary School.	Children assemble for the arrival of Chris, Ryne and the two interns to visit the school.	During the assembly, the Headmaster had the children sing the PNG national anthem.	Bandicoot is trapped and then cleaned and just needs to be roasted over the fire.
These young ladies try to read the new shell book that Chris produced.	The shell books were a big hit. Igoi's first Number One Bestseller!	These men go over the shell book to make sure that things are correct.

Taro! Taro! Taro!

We know it looks like the jungle but this is actually in the garden.	Everyone is proud to display the taro. Taro is the staple among the Sob people.	Relationships are important in Papua New Guinea. Exchanging taro among the Sob people is a way to strengthen relationships.	Everyone has their pots lined up to cook the first taro harvest of the new year.
Lori tested her muscles by pulling her own taro. (They had pre-loosened it for her!)	Chris worked up a sweat getting his taro. Picking green beans is so much easier!

Ukarumpa Sports Day

Ryne makes his approach at the high jump trying to defend his title from last year.

This jump is good but Ryne didn't place in the high jump as he had wished.

Ryne attempts to throw his body in the long jump. Unfortunately he fell back on this attempt.

Ryne did well on this jump. He ended up placing second in the long jump with a jump of 4.9 meters (16.08 feet).

More than Translation

Chris is asked to preach in Igoi occasionally.
