PRAYERS AND PRAISES - September 30, 2008

GENERAL REQUESTS FOR THE BRANCH:
Please Pray:

  • For renewed vision and vigor for the branch.
  • That God will raise up missionaries and mother-tongue translators to finish the task of Bible translation here in PNG.
  • For wisdom and Godly leadership for our directors: Kyle Harris, Martha Wade (Language Affairs), and Eunice Messersmith (Support Services).
  • For safety for Martha Wade, who is currently traveling in China on her way to the U.S. for home assignment.
  • For safety and refreshment for Laura Roberts and Lori Witham, who are in Lae taking a much-needed break their work.
  • For the office extension, especially for funding of the remaining balance needed. Praise God for good progress and for the safety of the construction crew.

CURRENT BRANCH MEMBERS: WILLIAM and ROBIN BUTLER (Waran translation)
Give Thanks:

  • For successful travel of the Waran team from Yar village by river to Likan/Tamo to catch the plane. Although Samuel did not make it to Yar to travel with the rest of the team, he was able to come later and still made the plane.
  • For the successful consultant checking of 1 & 2 Peter with consultant Chris Urton. Lord willing, that will be completed today.

Please Pray:

  • For Max Kamgru and Kevin Mong, literacy supervisors for the Waran program. They have been here to assist with the checking of Peter but after the session ends will travel to Madang to work for two weeks on translating the English preschool curriculum to the local trade language Tok Pisin so that it can be more widely used.
  • For William and Samuel as they prepare for the translation workshop of the book of Revelation that starts Oct. 8.
  • For the financial support of all missionaries, who are facing critical financial situations due to the decline of the dollar and bleak economic conditions faced by their supporters.
  • That William and Robin's health will continue to be good.
  • For their daughter Bethaney as she gathers prayer and financial support for coming to PNG to work with PBT.

KYLE and KATHY HARRIS (Madang: Marangis translation; director)
Give Thanks:

  • For the great progress on the building expansion and for God's provision for that.
  • That things have been fairly quiet around town lately.

Please Pray:

  • That the guys from Marangis come in soon so that Kyle can arrange with them to start the Adapt-it work on Luke.
  • For continued protection and peace as they live on the boat. There are not many people in the anchorage right now and that always makes them a bit uneasy. There is a certain amount of safety in numbers.
  • That a space in the slipway opens up soon so that they can get some work done on the boat.

STEVE and RHONDA HAYWARD (Yimnalem: Tay translation)
Give Thanks:

  • For God's moving in the lives of the teens at the Encounter retreat. Eighteen made decisions for the Lord and were baptized during Encounter, two more the day after they returned.
  • That preparations to return to the village Tuesday have gone well.
  • That Jason is doing well at Johnson Bible College.
  • That a flight was worked out for Carissa so that she can go with Steve and Rhonda to the village Tuesday and return for school on October 7.
  • That Rhonda got more literacy and Scripture use work done with Gabriel and Wij than she anticipated.

Please Pray:

  • For good weather and safe passage to the village on Tuesday. Gabriel and Wij left Friday, but the airstrip was clouded in by the time they got there. The pilot diverted to another air strip and they hiked to the village from there (about 10 hours). Pray that the Haywards can rest in the Lord and have peace whatever happens.
  • For God's leading and wisdom during the three weeks Steve and Rhonda are in the village. This will be the first time they have been back in nearly three years. They are eager to see all their Tay friends.

MIKE and EUNICE HERCHENROEDER (Madang: Akukem translation; missionary care)
Give Thanks:

  • That Akukem team member Leo made it safely to town so that he and Mike could finish correcting the Akukem translation of Acts.
  • For the launch of a new Bible study for missionary women last week.
  • That Mike learned that Akukem community and church leaders would not be able to meet with him Monday as planned BEFORE he made the arduous trip out to the Akukem area!

Please Pray:

  • For Mike as he devotes himself to preparing for a course he will soon lead to teach new computer skills to national translators working in five languages.
  • For Eunice as she facilitates the work of three men who are translating literacy curriculum for village schools from English into Tok Pisin. One man, Justin, will probably arrive in town this week to work with Eunice on a dictionary of English words for which there are no Tok Pisin words or even simple phrases.

CHRIS and LORI URTON (Sob translation)
Give Thanks:

  • That Chris and the guys were able to get 50 verses of Luke rough drafted while Chris was in the village.
  • That Chris and William Butler are going to be able to get the Waran translation of 1 & 2 Peter consultant checking done this week.
  • That Chris was able to change his flight to Madang and go a few days earlier than planned.
  • For all their friends and family looking out for Lori while Chris is in PNG.

Please Pray:

  • For Chris and William Butler as they finish up consultant checking 1 & 2 Peter this week.
  • That Chris can use his time wisely in Madang before leaving for the States on Oct 15. He has some paperwork that he needs to get done before leaving PNG.
  • For Lori as she travels this week to spend some time with Chris's parents and her mom.
  • For Ryne in school.
  • For Lori's mom's health.

FUTURE CO-WORKERS:
JILL RIEPE (future translation consultant)
Give Thanks:

  • For the many opportunities to share her ministry with PBT.
  • For new partners in the ministry.
  • For dissertation progress and a place to work on her dissertation.
  • For God's provision for all her needs.
  • For family and friends.
  • For a few weekends without travel.

Please Pray:

  • For focused and disciplined times working on the dissertation.
  • For favor with her dissertation advisers.
  • For her physical, mental, and emotional preparation to go to PNG.
  • For safe passage for her crate traveling to PNG.
  • For her support level to continue to improve.
  • For her follow up on her recent partnership development trips.
